Kitchens for Houses That Already Have a Point of View

Theilluum is a kitchen remodeling contractor in Palm Springs, and nearly all of our work happens inside houses built in the post-war modernist years: post-and-beam homes, butterfly roofs, walls of glass facing a mountain view, and the neighborhoods of tract houses that made the city’s reputation. People buy these houses because of how they look and feel. Then they open the kitchen cabinets and find something from a much later decade, or an original kitchen that is charming and almost impossible to cook in.

We came to this work because we kept seeing the same mistake. A kitchen gets remodeled to the standard of whatever was selling that year, and the house loses a little of what made it worth owning. Raised panel doors under a clerestory window. A soffit built across a beam line. A granite backsplash running up to glass that was meant to be the backsplash. None of it is wrong on its own. It just belongs to a different house.

How We Approach a Job

We start by looking, not designing. Before any drawings, we walk the house and write down what is original and what is not, and we ask what you actually cook, how many people are in the kitchen at once, and whether the house is lived in all year or rented out for part of it. That conversation shapes everything after it.

From there the work is ordinary good practice, done carefully. Measured drawings. Permits through the City of Palm Springs when walls, plumbing or circuits change. An engineer when a beam or header is involved. Testing for asbestos and lead before anything old gets demolished. Cabinets and slabs ordered early because lead times drive the schedule. Work started early in the morning through the summer.

What We Will Tell You

Sometimes the right answer is to keep more than you planned. Sound plywood cabinet boxes from the original build can outlast anything we could replace them with. Sometimes the answer is that a change you want costs far more in a slab-on-grade, exposed ceiling house than it would elsewhere. We would rather say that on the first visit than on the change order.
